Types of Child Therapy at R&T

Family Therapy

Family Therapy recognizes the importance of the child's relationships to parents and other family members. The therapist can learn more about the child from family members, and can help family members to get better at supporting the child's recovery.

Play Therapy

Play Therapy might include art, puppets, games, or play-acting. Younger children often find it easier to work with their concerns symbolically, and in an active way, rather than by using words. Play therapy has been shown to be highly-effective for young children.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) uses small rewards or successes as motivators to replace negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviors with more useful ones, in a systematic, step-wise manner. Trauma-Focused CBT also involves having the child create a book, or talk, to tell the story of the trauma memory.

Child Coaching

Though not therapy, coaching can provide an additional resource to help your child. The benefits of coaching can add to a parent’s arsenal for battling behavioral distress. Coaches have special skills to support kids in developing resilience and other personal skills that will serve them throughout their life.

FAQs

  • Child Therapy at Roubicek and Thacker Counseling is a specialized form of therapy tailored to meet the emotional, developmental, and behavioral needs of children. It provides a safe space for them to express themselves, understand their feelings, and develop coping strategies.

  • Childhood is a period of significant change – the symptoms of behavioral health and mental disorders may look very different in a younger child versus an adult or even a teenager, and the therapies used for children can be different, too, based on the research supporting their use.

With any effective child therapy, there should be clear expectations on the length of treatment, goals, and milestones.

  • Common issues include anxiety, depression, behavioral problems, ADHD, coping with divorce or family changes, bullying, trauma, grief, and academic and social challenges.

  • How best to participate in a child’s therapy depends primarily on the child’s age, the nature of the problem, and whether research supports parental involvement in the type of treatment your child is receiving. In some situations, particularly with younger children, parental guidance may be critical to bring about and support behavioral change between therapy sessions. In other situations, particularly with older children or adolescents, privacy between the child and therapist may form an important foundation for establishing trust and promoting behavioral change. In every case, parents should be clear on the therapist’s goals for treating their child and should understand the milestones their child is expected to reach throughout his/her treatment. Feel free to ask the therapist at the outset about how he/she plans to work with the child.

  • The vast majority of the children we see are excited to be here and often don’t want to leave. Some children with separation difficulties may need a few sessions to acclimate to their new environment. We work for a gradual separation, if needed. It is very important to us that both parents and children feel safe and comfortable in this environment.

  • Sessions usually last about 50 minutes. However, the length can vary based on the specific needs and circumstances of the family.

The number of sessions varies depending on the child’s unique situation and goals. Some children achieve their objectives in a few sessions, while others may need more time.
