Accessing Creativity During Difficult Times

What a year this week has been. Am I right?

Here are some realizations I’ve had in the past five days:

  1. We’re all people.

  2. We’re all having a bit of trouble shifting our lives around.

  3. We’re all feeling a bit out of control.

  4. We’re all feeling more than we’re used to.

  5. We’re all uncertain about the future.

And:

  1. We’re all people.

  2. We’re all adaptable.

  3. We’re all creative.

  4. We’re all capable of helping.

  5. We’re all in this together.

I also read an article this week about how therapists are talking to their clients who are anxious about the state of our world right now (check it out – it’s really great). It lists several things that I found to be resonant with the conversations with my clients this week. In addition to this list, I'd also add: this time allows us to tap into our creative and adaptable side. Research shows that fear shrinks your brain and makes you less creative (over time), so if we do what we can to lessen our anxieties, the more likely it is we can access our problem-solving skills and shift our lives in creative, positive ways. We just don’t always assume we can. But we can. Because we're all capable of more than we give ourselves credit for.

During this time, may we not forget that we are fragile, amazing creatures, whose curiosity and creativity are still accessible.

We got this.
