Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist

Anxiety | Children with Behavioral Problems | Couples Counseling

Dr. Sergio Pereyra is a passionate Marriage and Family Therapist who strongly believes in empowering those who are underprivileged and underserved. He received both his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Marriage and Family Therapy from Brigham Young University. Sergio is a professor in the Counselor Education program at Fresno State University and has research publications in refereed journals regarding Latino couples’ relationship satisfaction and Latino family dynamics.

Sergio specializes in treating couple’s conflict, communication problems, intimacy issues, infidelity and trust issues, pornography and other sexual addictions, acculturation challenges, immigration issues, adolescent issues, spirituality issues, and anxiety. He also has an expertise in treating children with behavioral problems and taught culturally sensitive parenting courses to low-income families for the Utah Department of Public Health for five years.

As a Latino AMFT with a strong cultural identity, Sergio is not only able to communicate perfectly in Spanish with Spanish-speaking clients, but he also has a deep understanding of cultural nuances that could influence behaviors and treatment outcomes in therapy. He also has extensive experience working with couples, families and individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and socio-economic levels.

I’ve always had a big heart and an altruistic disposition, but as I have gained experience over the years as an MFT, I not only gained the skills needed to help people through life’s challenges but I have learned to really ‘be’ with my clients. As my clients share their hopes, dreams, fears, struggles and most personal and intimate experiences with me, I can’t help but hold these experiences as sacred and I feel extremely blessed to join them in their progress towards happiness.
